Our Story

Our passion for coffee was sparked in college by a little shop on East Bay Street in Charleston called Fulford and Egan. Many nights were spent working on term papers over an espresso or listening to spoken word over a warm cappuccino. We didn’t know it then, but the book-covered walls and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee made a lasting impression.

Over the years, during many trips to Central and South America, we found ourselves seeking out local coffee—almost inadvertently at first. Perhaps it was the smell of freshly ground beans triggering something Pavlovian, or, just as likely, it was simply a way to escape the tropical heat. Whatever the cause, it always led to learning more about the local culture and experiencing a new cup, or a new way of farming and processing coffee.

Many years later, when a small coffee shop went up for sale in downtown Gastonia, North Carolina, we jumped at the chance. There, we learned how to be proper baristas and came to understand the time, temperature, and skill involved in creating the perfect drink. We also learned the importance of community. Our staff became our family, and neighboring businesses and customers became close friends. Unfortunately, we hadn’t foreseen a global pandemic when creating our business plan and ultimately had to close the doors. Such is life; we had to roll with the punches and move forward.

Despite multiple changes in family, career, and geographic location, the love for and warmth of a good cup of coffee never left us. So, now we find ourselves once again following our passion and starting a little roastery here in Indian Land. We call ourselves Boykin Coffee Roasters in honor of my father and the bond he shared with his Boykin Spaniel , and as a proud nod to where we are from, as the Boykin is the official dog of South Carolina.

As always, we appreciate you stopping by.
